Warsop and District News

Sure Start logoSure Start is coming to Meden Valley, targeting the Northfield area of Mansfield Woodhouse, and areas in and around Market Warsop, including the villages of Church Warsop and Warsop Vale. (However, we will not exclude any family who live elsewhere from using our services or activities if they wish to use them.) Sure Start aims to improve services for children under 4 and their families, including pregnant women and those people planning a family too.

Sure Start is about giving children the best possible chance to grow up happy and healthy and ready for school. It will do this by working with parents, families and workers from relevant organisations to develop a programme of activities and services that people want and need, now and in the future. About 818 children and their families will benefit and we are now well on the way to making it happen. Our delivery plan was submitted to the Sure Start Unit in London on 8th March and our Programme Manager, Jude Burgess is now in post. So what will we be doing? Well, having spent time talking to parents and families across the area we now have some valuable information about the kinds of things that parents/families feel are missing. Workers too have shared ideas about what needs to be in place to enable them to support families better. These ideas will form the basis of what Sure Start will do in Meden Valley, and although the details are still being worked up, here is an idea of what we hope to do;-

Visit every family living in the Sure Start area to make sure that they know about us and about the activities/services there are locally that they could use.
Support the extension/development of new services, such toddler groups, toy library, play and learn sessions, crèche sessions and quality childcare.
Make sure that all children and their families have access local facilities, including new Sure Start buildings.
Provide health care and advice in a supportive and sensitive way.
Encourage dads to get involved too!
Create opportunities for families to learn together.
Ensure children and families with special needs get the support and services they need.
Encourage families to get involved in planning events and running the Sure Start programme.
Create opportunities for all those working to support families to co-ordinate what they do and develop ways work together.
In the meantime ……….. we are busy recruiting staff and looking for somewhere to be based. Further information will available soon with a full programme of activities – watch this space for details!!!.

Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group
From this time of year our workdays on the first Sunday of each month are devoted mainly to grass cutting and hedge trimming to keep Warsop's footpaths clear. As I have mentioned before, the best way to prevent paths from becoming overgrown is for people to walk along them so I would like to say thank you to the many regular walkers who make our job easier!
Our February walk was particularly enjoyable with ten
people taking the minibus to Friden on the High Peak
Trail in Derbyshire. We completed a circular walk
including Middleton Dale and Long Dale.
Our walk on Sunday 21st April will be even
further afield. We are spending the day at Gibraltar
Point on the Lincolnshire coast, an area that is
particularly fascinating for its bird and plant life. If you
are interested in either of these areas, or just fancy a
bracing walk in the fresh air, why not join us? We shall be leaving Warsop Library at 8am, you will need a packed lunch (and maybe breakfast!) and weatherproof clothing. There will be a very small contribution towards the cost of the minibus. You are welcome to join us, please get in touch to confirm details.
On May 19th we will be walking from Edale in
Derbyshire. In June our destination will be the Roches
in the western Peak District. Although these could be
fairly strenuous walks, this group believes in taking its
time and we regularly stop to investigate the plants, fungi, birds and landscape (particularly on uphill sections!). You can contact the Secretary on 01623 846281 WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We help maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment.

Inner Wheel Club of Warsop
March 2002
Our March meeting held at the Hostess Restaurant was a business meeting. President Marlene asked the members to stand for a minute’s silence in memory of Diana Goodman, a Past president who died recently. She welcomed two guests, Don Crosby and Diana’s sister Isabel. Grace was said by Jean Nock. Don Crosby presented Inner Wheel with a bell in memory of his late wife Joan. He told us about his visit to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, when he, along with his grandson, presented them
with a cheque being a donation in lieu of flowers for Joan.
Secretary Jean Nock read the correspondence and Charter invitations. Lesley Palmer, Overseas Chairman, said some of the blankets were going to Europe and some goods would be going with the
Police convoy in May. Cynthia Parsons reported that the charity Shop was booked for
the 18th – 23rd March, and a rota was compiled, also a fashion show is to be arranged for Monday 13th May at the Hostess. More details later.
Margaret Huddlestone gave the Almoners report. The nominations for 2002-2003 were discussed, and the visit to the Glasgow conference was finalised. The dates for the May and June meetings have to be changed.
Eunice Burton thanked the members for their kindness to Diana during her illness, for the cards, flowers and visits to Diana and herself. She appreciated all the kind thoughts. An outing to York is to be arranged for April or May 2002. Sheila Simpson, Club Correspondent

The group met for their last meeting of the winter series on Tuesday 12th of March 2002 in the Parish Centre when the speaker was Mr David Murfin of Church Warsop. Mr Murfin, who is a part time gamekeeper addressed the group of around 25 members, fully attired in Gamekeeper/Deerstalker

He brought with him a comprehensive exhibition of the equipment he uses when Deerstalking, together with trophies from Scotland where he spends time on
Deer culls for Scottish Forestry and for land owners.
His wife Angela assisted during the evening with a raffle for 2 joints of Venison and a bottle of Red Wine kindly provided by herself and David which raised £28.00 for Centre Club Funds and was won by Mr Ken Banford.

Meden Money Tree is Growing

After planting it’s roMeden Money Tree logoots in Market Warsop with the opening of two Collection Points, Meden Money Tree have now branched out into Shirebrook and opened a Collection Point in the Elliott Yates Estate Agency in the Town. More volunteers are required in the area willing to be trained for Collection Point or other duties. The training is provided locally and only takes a few hours. Thereafter it is planned to open additional Collection Points.

Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the Common Bond Area, with junior savers achieving full membership at 18 years of age. After saving regularly for 12 weeks members can apply for a low cost loan from the Credit Union. The first loan can be for up to 1- times savings, the second loan for double your savings and subsequent loans for up to three times savings as members build their credit worthiness within the Credit Union. There are no set-up costs, hidden charges or penalties on loans and the interest is calculated at the rate of 1% per month on the remaining balance of the loan. For a loan of £100 paid back over one year the total repayment is £106.50. The first loans have now been approved in Market Warsop and membership is gradually increasing.

In the event of the death of a member, the Credit Union provides insurance to cover loans, and also, for members up to 70 years of age, to increase their savings that are paid to their nominee. This is no charge to the members for this benefit as it is paid by the Credit Union from its income. If you would like to become a member, a volunteer or just obtain more information about the Credit Union please call in The Elliott Yates Estates Agency or telephone 01623 747956 in Shirebrook or 01623 845858 in Market Warsop. LABOUR RESIST BID TO MOVE WARSOP INTO MANSFIELD

Labour Party members in Nottinghamshire say they will oppose Boundary Commission plans to incorporate Warsop into Mansfield's Westminster seat. The commission's proposal, follows a review to even out electorates in the eight county constituencies. The addition of Warsop, which has been in Bassetlaw since 1983, would make Mansfield the largest Nottinghamshire seat with 77,524 voters and bring it into line with the district council area.

But Warsop's MP John Mann, who is soon to open a new permanent office in the town, told Chad that Warsop was "fed up of making up the numbers" and insisted the change would not benefit residents. "One of the reasons is that the one remaining colliery and the biggest employer, Welbeck Colliery, is in Bassetlaw district and the Boundary Commission needs to look at the economic case longer term," he said. "The other point is that Warsop has just applied for town council status which is a sign of its growing move to autonomy and independence, which is what I think it needs."

Mansfield MP Alan Meale said: "I would like to see the boundaries stay as they are because the new member for Bassetlaw has built up a good rapport with Warsop people. "But if the boundary review remains the same, I would be more than delighted to represent them."

The move, plus other possible changes in the north of the county, could make Bassetlaw a marginal seat in future elections. Council chief executive Richard Goad said that from an administrative point of view, the arrangement would be "excellent" as Warsop residents receive most of their services from Mansfield. Labour's opposition could force a public inquiry and Mr Mann is confident the commission will change its mind. Whatever the outcome, no changes will be made before the next general election, as the national review will not be completed until 2006. The proposals must then be approved by Parliament before being implemented
