Sure
Start is about giving children the best possible chance to grow
up happy and healthy and ready for school. It will do this by
working with parents, families and workers from relevant organisations
to develop a programme of activities and services that people want
and need, now and in the future. About 818 children and their families
will benefit and we are now well on the way to making it happen.
Our delivery plan was submitted to the Sure Start Unit in London
on 8th March and our Programme Manager, Jude Burgess is now in post.
So what will we be doing? Well, having spent time talking
to parents and families across the area we now have some valuable
information about the kinds of things that parents/families feel
are missing. Workers too have shared ideas about what needs to be
in place to enable them to support families better. These ideas
will form the basis of what Sure Start will do in Meden Valley,
and although the details are still being worked up, here is an idea
of what we hope to do;- |

planting its ro Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in the Common Bond Area, with junior savers achieving full membership at 18 years of age. After saving regularly for 12 weeks members can apply for a low cost loan from the Credit Union. The first loan can be for up to 1- times savings, the second loan for double your savings and subsequent loans for up to three times savings as members build their credit worthiness within the Credit Union. There are no set-up costs, hidden charges or penalties on loans and the interest is calculated at the rate of 1% per month on the remaining balance of the loan. For a loan of £100 paid back over one year the total repayment is £106.50. The first loans have now been approved in Market Warsop and membership is gradually increasing. In the event of the death of a member, the Credit Union provides insurance to cover loans, and also, for members up to 70 years of age, to increase their savings that are paid to their nominee. This is no charge to the members for this benefit as it is paid by the Credit Union from its income. Labour Party members in Nottinghamshire say they will oppose Boundary Commission plans to incorporate Warsop into Mansfield's Westminster seat. The commission's proposal, follows a review to even out electorates in the eight county constituencies. The addition of Warsop, which has been in Bassetlaw since 1983, would make Mansfield the largest Nottinghamshire seat with 77,524 voters and bring it into line with the district council area. But Warsop's MP John Mann, who is soon to open a new permanent office in the town, told Chad that Warsop was "fed up of making up the numbers" and insisted the change would not benefit residents. "One of the reasons is that the one remaining colliery and the biggest employer, Welbeck Colliery, is in Bassetlaw district and the Boundary Commission needs to look at the economic case longer term," he said. "The other point is that Warsop has just applied for town council status which is a sign of its growing move to autonomy and independence, which is what I think it needs." Mansfield MP Alan Meale said: "I would like to see the boundaries stay as they are because the new member for Bassetlaw has built up a good rapport with Warsop people. "But if the boundary review remains the same, I would be more than delighted to represent them." The
move, plus other possible changes in the north of the county, could
make Bassetlaw a marginal seat in future elections. Council chief
executive Richard Goad said that from an administrative point of view,
the arrangement would be "excellent" as Warsop residents
receive most of their services from Mansfield. Labour's opposition
could force a public inquiry and Mr Mann is confident the commission
will change its mind. Whatever the outcome, no changes will be made
before the next general election, as the national review will not
be completed until 2006. The proposals must then be approved by Parliament
before being implemented | |
