Title - shadow in sherwood forestThis year's all night navigation exercise for young people, Shadow is the 29th of its kind and takes place overnight from Saturday-Sunday 19-20 October in Sherwood Forest. Shadow is the biggest all-night orienteering exercise in the UK. It is organised by Notts County Council's Youth Service and now is the time for teams of young people (male or female) to apply.

Teams must have five members, aged from 13 to 20. They each play differing roles within the team: one is team captain, two are navigators who will need map reading and compass skills, and two need to be first aiders with basic skills in life saving techniques. To take part you need to have a spirit of adventure, skill, enthusiasm and the ability to work together in very difficult circumstances. Although it is a fun event, it is the team with the highest score who wins. On the night, Sherwood Forest will be divided into different sectors. The teams then have to work their way through the sectors dealing with various incidents. Marks are awarded for achievement of the tasks and team co-operation. The exercise starts at 8.00pm and lasts for at least 8 hours.

The event is covered by a comprehensive communications network through the forest. Excellent First Aid facilities are provided by the Red Cross who are able to reach anywhere in the Forest. There is a feeding station in the forest that provides teams with a hot drink and food. At the end of the exercise a full breakfast is available. Security of the event is managed through the communications network and traffic movement officers, with a phone link to the emergency services. Only people taking part in Shadow are allowed on site. A team of more than 300 volunteers help to organise and operate the event. These include people from WRVS, the Red Cross, Notts Emergency Scout Support Team (NESST), County Emergency Communication Team and helpers from youth organisations.

Four awards will be presented at the end of this year's Shadow. These are:

British Inter County Competition - for teams from throughout the UK
In-County Competition - for teams within Nottinghamshire
Youth Club Competition - for Youth Club Teams from Nottinghamshire
Duke of Edinburgh Award Competition - for Duke of Edinburgh Award groups

The cost of entry per team is £20. For more information or to enter a team please contact West Notts Area Office on Tel: 01623 626949 or consult the website at www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Canyon/1260. The closing date for entries is 31 July 2002.

MILLENNIUM WINDOW
FOR
WARSOP PARISH CHURCH

Warsop parishioner Mrs Sallie Wood has designed a new stained glass window for Warsop Parish Church as a celebration of the Millennium. Sited in the South aisle the window depicts the Madonna and
Child and symbolises the birth of Christianity. The window was funded by Warsop Ladies’ Probus Club, church members and members of the community and was dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell, the Rt Rev George Cassidy, during Sunday week’s service at the church. It was made by Mick Stokes, of MDS Stained Glass, of Edwinstowe.

Birklands School Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Photo - Birklands school

The Golden Jubilee celebrations started with a school quiz based on the 1950’s Prizes (sponsored by Warsop Motor Company) were presented to eleven children in the Infant and Junior sections of
the school. The Whiz Show was next, featuring circus performances from Boo
Boo’s Entertainments. The dress code for the children was red, white and blue, while the staff dressed in 1950’s style, the clothes made by Roz Stafford and Jayne Blackledge.

After lunch the playground was transformed into a street party set with flags, bunting and 300 helium filled balloons decorating the tables and the stage. The 1950’s music was provided by Kev Keegan, followed by a live rock and roll band called The Red Rockets, led by Paul Craythorne. Enthusiastic parents gave a display of jiving to entertain the children. Balloon modellers circulated amongst the children during the party session alongside face painters from West
Notts College. The parents sent in the food and drink and a 1950’s sponsored quiz funded the rest of the entertainment. Thanks to Warsop Motor Company for their sponsorship of the event. To finish the celebrations the Birklands P.T.F.A presented each child with a commemorative coin. The school wish to thank all the parents and governors who helped to make it such a memorable day.
Birklands School took the Golden Jubilee Celebrations as a platform to display their plans for new Birklands Community Exchange building which is to be financed by MASP and Warsop Neighbourhood Management Development Group.
The project has a completion of autumn 2002.

Photo - recognition awards

They’re the people that keep Mansfield moving and for the first time, you have got the opportunity to recognise their efforts.

Mansfield District Council has launched its first Employee Recognition Awards (ERAs), the first District Council in Notts to introduce such an initiative. The awards recognise the significant contribution employees make to the effective operation of the Council and services provided to the public. The ERAs are fully sponsored by local business and trade unions, and was initiated by the Council's Joint Consultative Committee, in order to recognise employee achievement. The awards provide the opportunity to recognise the effort, skill and ability of employees and through recognising their work, it is hoped services can be improved further still.

You can nominate a Council employee who has provided an excellent service to you for the Wilkinson Customer Service award. Everyone nominating will be entered into a £25 cash prize draw. There are four main awards in total:

  • Employee of the Year - sponsored by GMB and Unison
  • Innovation of the Year - sponsored by Angle Technology (managers of the Mansfield I-Centre)
  • Team of the Year - sponsored by Nottingham Building Society
  • Customer Service Award - sponsored by Wilkinson

The awards will be judged by a panel of employee representatives and award sponsors and facilitated by the Learning and Skills Council. Winners will be announced at a celebration evening on 29th November. Sponsors of the evening celebration are Simmons Builders Merchants, GMB, John Sankey, Jewson, Pellacraft, Ovoline Oils and Matthews and Tannert Ltd.

Richard Goad, Chief Executive Officer at the Council said the awards are about recognising employees who have done that extra little bit to benefit their customers, whether that be for a member of the public or a colleague. "The Council often receives critical publicity for the problems that people may encounter, but little is heard from the many satisfied customers we have. “There are many employees dedicated to providing the best possible service to the public and who are committed to public service in all its guises."

Lorna Carter, Deputy Leader (Resources) at the Council added: "In recent years employees have had to deal with numerous changes and challenges in local government.” “To overcome this they have had to show flexibility and commitment in delivering services to the public. “The aim of these awards is to recognise this and by doing that we hope it will ultimately help to uplift our services still further.”

To nominate an employee for the customer service award, pick up a leaflet from any Council building and return it (freepost) before 7th October.

Warsop Remembered
to the Editor...
When I was a schoolgirl at Church Warsop Infants School (1936-39) we were given mugs for various Royal occasions. Then we were all given a book from the ‘Urban District of Warsop” with our name written in it, commemorating The Coronation of Their Majesties King
George VI and Queen Elizabeth May 12th 1937. Fred Blackburn, Chairman of the Council and Coronation Celebrations Committee. WM. Capes Vice Chairman. Alfred H. Coupe, Clerk of the Council, William H. Pickering, Hon Sec and George Vth had died earlier in 1936 (Jan).
One of the mugs was a Jubilee mug for King George V and Queen Mary (I wonder if I was named after her?). Another was for Edward and he never became King. My Aunt was a Maid for the Duchess of Portland (I believe she was a dresser), he was a regular visitor to the Abbey.
Are Warsop Parish Council presenting the school children with anything this year? or Are their too many children now that would make the cost too great?
Anyway I still have my book and happy memories of Warsop. Mrs M.Duddridge

Footpaths and Countryside Group

As I write these notes in early June I am pleased to be able to report that we have resolved the insurance cover problems that has prevented us from working on the footpaths network since the end of April. As soon as we
receive the necessary documentation we shall be arranging additional work sessions in order to catch up on the grass cutting, hedge trimming and other work that we have been unable to complete. I hope that not too many of you have gained wet trousers by walking along overgrown paths but there is no way that we could risk working without the proper insurance cover.

After several trips away from the local area our next three walks will be closer to home. Our walk on Sunday July 21st will be a circular walk in the Whitwell area including passing through Markland Grips, an attractive section of the Elmton Valley that is a nature reserve and the site
of many archaeological finds. The minibus will leave Warsop Library at 10am.
The August walk will be from Teversal back to Warsop via Pleasley Vale. We have completed this walk a couple of times before but never at this time of year. As Colin is leading you can expect many stops to admire and identify the wild flowers along the way. This walk will be on Sunday 18th August meeting at Warsop Library at 10am. For either walk please phone the number below to
confirm details.
I would like to recommend a fine local walk taking between two and three hours involving a stretch of the National Cycle Route. Head out of Market Warsop taking Upper Cross Lane from the top of Cherry Grove. Go past the sewage works towards the forest and carry on through the forest as far as the corner of Budby Common. Turn left along the cycle track, pass the Budby Pumping Station and cross the road, keeping to the cycle track. When the A616 is reached at Hazel Gap do not cross the road (unless you want to inspect the
new signpost) but take the left turn along the track back towards Warsop. You can either take the first footpath signed left and cross the road at the white gates or take the second left path going through Gleadthorpe Grange. Turn right at the top of the hill and head back into Warsop.
You can contact the Secretary. Tel:01623 846281
WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We help maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment.

THANK YOU

Once again thanks for an enjoyable evening, also for giving your time for the senior citizens .
YOU are a smashing lot.

Bramblings, Bramblings and even more Bramblings, from the Old Part to Robin Hood estate, Church Warsop to Meden Vale these
beautiful finches from the birch forests of Fenno-Scandia are visiting feeding stations and gardens all over our fair village. Look out
for a bird the same size as a Chaffinch but with a very distinctive white rump.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me about last month’s report. In particular my comments about Geese only living in the Northern Hemisphere seem to have caused some confusion. A number of readers were quick to point out that they have seen geese on visits to Australia, the far east and even the Falklands, and of course they are right, what I was referring to (perhaps with hindsight I should have been more specific), was what scientists and ornithologists call ‘True’ geese, these are the ‘grey’ geese (Anser ) and the
‘black’ geese (Branta) the ones in the southern hemisphere are something similar to our Shellduck I suppose,- neither duck nor goose
but something in between! I hope that clears up the confusion.

Since that little ‘goose fact’ caused so much interest, what about a few more? geese are monogamous and pair for life, both parents tend the young and the adults moult all flight feathers simultaneously and are flightless for about 3 to 4 weeks in summer and are vulnerable to predation by foxes during this time.

An extremely rare Lark, the Woodlark is making a sensational comeback at a number of local sites, it would be wrong perhaps even
against the law to list the known sites but they are definitely doing better of late.

Tony Fell reports three Buzzards over Hammerwater Drive on February 3rd; other records include Fieldfare, Redwing and Golden
Plover over towards Warsop Vale.

The Woodland Trust has joined forces with The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to monitor and record the effect of climatic change on wildlife and habitats. The main thrust of this initiative is to record natures clock or phenology to give it its scientific name and The UK Phenology Network are asking for information on things like first sighting of frog spawn, the appearance of flowers, butterflies and arrival of migrant birds such as Cuckoo, Swallows and House martins.

Anyone who is interested in taking part in this very important work can get the information and the record forms from the UK Phenology Trust FREEPOST Autumn Park, Grantham, Lincs NG31 6BR
Tel: 01476581111 or visit their Web Pages on www.woodland-trust.org.uk

The news from Minster Wood is that the diversity and species listed there grows bigger by the week and the work that Trev Kinch
and his team are putting in to establish the Hazel coppice is already paying dividends. When Trev first started there he recorded just
thirteen species of ground flora after just two years he is now recording forty-five! Add to this the butterflies birds and mammals that will benefit from this sustainable programme and it is easy to see that this little area is going to be a hotspot of the future, who knows, one day we may even get a Nightingale to return.

Birklands Ringing Group have received some very interesting recoveries of birds ringed in Warsop or ringed in other places and have
subsequently landed in Warsop. These include a number of Siskins going North to the Highlands of Scotland and even to Sweden in one case. A Canada goose moving from Warsop to Attenborough Nature Reserve and a Goldcrest going to Holland. I will report on any future ringing results as they come to hand, it really is amazing where ‘our’ birds turn up sometimes.

Late News; The year is on the turn, Great tits, Song thrush, Mistle thrush and Robin have all been in full song and Lesser Celandine
is starting to appear.
Listen out for Chiffchaff and Blackcap and any other spring migrants as they begin to arrive, usually around late March.
Keep your records coming in to me at 55 George Street, or via email at moody49er @aol.com you may wish to visit my Web Pages on www.bobmoody.co.uk

3 PARISHES WALK
12th of May 2002.

As requested by the Editor in last months W&DN, I havecompiled a short report about the 3 Parishes Walk which I hope you will find interesting. Having arrived at the Tudor Barn, at 9.30 am for what was to be my fourth 3 Parishes Walk, it was good to see so many people turning out, for what is something old and the young alike enjoy, and get a lot of pleasure and in some cases funding out of.

After taking the names of members of our group i.e. 1st Welbeck Beavers, Cubs, Scouts all doing the walk we received our routes from Councillor Colin Avison who organised the event. We all gathered outside for a big send off by the Chairman (Councillor John Allin) of the Parish Council. Councillor Allin wished us all a good and safe journey and he stated that refreshments would be available for us all at the end.

This year we did the 6 and a half mile, five mile and 3 and a quarter mile walks, we walked across the Carrs and by the side of the river Maun and to the Carr Lane end of Warsop where there is some lovely countryside to be found. We had at least 8 children all aged about 6 – 7 years leading the way, stopping only once to have a drink and a much needed rest. They learned a lot about the countryside they live in. We made our way to Warsop Vale, and on to Church Warsop across the fields to the Carrs, ending up back at the Tudor Barn where a nice smile and a drink of orange was waiting for us. It was a route which the disabled amongst us, took too, and did well with, putting me to shame.

A big thank you to the members of RAYNET and to all the other “background” staff for looking after everyone who took part. So to next year and we can do it all again. Can’t wait. Councillor V Jennings.

Are you entitled to more money?

Now’s an opportune time to check that you and your family are receiving their current entitlement to Social Security benefits.
The importance of checking entitlements was shown by a successful project undertaken by one of our Welfare Rights Officers, Anne Bennett. Anne saw an average of 9 people at her weekly advice sessions at the Warsop Health Centre and gained approximately £200,000 in unclaimed benefits for people.
It is particularly important that senior citizens check their benefits because many could be losing out on money that they are entitled to. Over the course of the past year the Department of Work and Pensions have introduced the minimum income guarantee; for people over 60 with savings of less than £12,000 and a weekly income of not more than about £98.15 for a single person or £149.80 (April 2002 rates) for a couple may be able to claim income support.
To find out it your benefits are correct and if you are entitled to any more, why not call and leave a message on our advice line and an officer will call you back.
Advise Line Open:
11am - 1pm Monday to Friday
