Meden Under Fives The Management Committee of Meden Under Fives Centre have recently been voted runners up in the Notts. CC 'Community Initiative Award'. During the last three years, the Management Committee has committed a lot of their time and effort to make the project a success. With the help of a part-time Community Development Worker (Jeannie Raspin), part-time Playleader (Helen Gammond), and a Family Worker who comes twice a week, (Julia Clarke), the group have learned management skills, co-ordinated playscheme activities for the school holidays, and provided crèches for several short courses relating to parenting and child care. A number of people involved in the project are now qualified in Early Years Child Care and are working professionally with young children. They have worked hard to attract new families into the centre by getting involved in local events such as the Warsop Carnival, and having an annual Open Day. Funds have been raised to build a pram shelter and extra storage space for soft play equipment: They have just been successful in a bid to SRB5 for £4500 to resurface the outside play area and have applied for a further £3000 from Sure Start for some of the preparation work and further developments. The Management Committee were delighted to have their hard work recognised by the County Council. Five volunteers from the team (past and present!) proudly represented the project when they attended the Mansfield Strategic Partnership 'Success 2001' Dinner where they were presented with a framed certificate for their achievements which is now on display in the centre. If you have young children and have not yet been to the Under Fives Centre and would like to know more about what they do, don't hesitate to drop in or ring them on 847022. |

Members
of Warsop Ladies Probus Club paid a silent tribute in memory of former
founder member, Mrs Elizabeth Spencer, when they met at the Parish
Centre for the monthly meeting held on 13th Feb. ~~~Return
to Top ~~~ The group met on the 12th of Feb with speakers Stuart Whittle & Keith Terry. They explained the work they do for the Credit Union since it started in 1998 in Warsop. The principal of the Credit Union started in the Napoleonic Wars and spread through Canada and North America especially during the recession in the 1920's and 1930's. It became established in this country in 1963 and now has 650 branches operating today. The next meeting is to be held at the Parish Centre on 12 March 2002 at 7.45PM when the speaker will be David Murfin of Church Warsop who will be talking about Game Shooting locally and in Scotland. Any
Warsop Man who would like to attend would be made most welcome. Brian

Footpaths & Countryside Group On our February workday group members repaired the steps leading from William Wood Lane onto the disused railway line and we also continued with clearance work. The next work days will be on March 3rd and April 7th. We start at 10.30 am. If you want to come along, phone Steve on 846281. We welcome anyone who wants to come along. The work can be physical but is suitable for both men and women. We are currently planning our footpaths and bridleways work programme for this year. If you know of a path that you think needs some work doing on it then let us know. Every year, we come across obstructions, blockages and problems on footpaths and bridleways that need to be sorted out. Where we can, we sort out the problem, otherwise we contact the relevant authority. Larger tasks have to be planned and may be budgeted for in the following financial year. Our March walk will be from Bolsover back to Warsop. We will meet at Warsop library at 10am on Sunday 17th March and travel to Bolsover by minibus. Everyone is welcome to join us, give us a call on the number below to confirm details. As I write these notes in early February, I am having to plan my local walks carefully to avoid the worst of the mud following a spell of wet weather. I have recently enjoyed a couple of brisk walks over the reclaimed Shirebrook pit tip. I must admit to 'cheating' by driving to the car park off Longster Lane adjoining the fishing lakes. I then headed up onto the part of the tip that is within Warsop Parish. This may not be a walk on which to admire the immediate surroundings or to contemplate how the area was before the tipping began but the views over Nettleworth and Sookholme are certainly interesting. Once the conifer plantations grow these views may be restricted but the landscape will hopefully be improved. For a longer outing you can cross Bath Lane onto the southern part of the tip and then follow the River Meden into Pleasley Vale. Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group meet on the first Thursday of the month at the Gate Inn, Warsop. Everyone is welcome to come along. For more information contact the Secretary on 01623 846281 WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We help maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment. WELBECK SCOUTERS - DIARY OF EVENTS March

WARSOP WIVES GROUP On
January 8th, our first meeting in 2002, we had a very interesting
talk with slides by Angela and John Hird entitled "Cycling
in the Pyrenees". Inner
Wheel Club of Warsop Cynthia Parsons read out the Charter and correspondence in the absence of Jean Nock who was ill. Sue Lunn gave the Treasurer report. A cheque for £100 had been sent to the Rainbow Hospice, a donation in lieu of Christmas cards. Acting Vice-President Cynthia gave the charity report. A charity Shop is to be held in Warsop on 18 - 23 March 2002. Overseas Chairman Lesley Palmer gave her report. The World Inner Wheel Day meeting, which had been cancelled, is to be held at President Marlene's on 21st February 2002. Almoner Margaret Huddlestone reported with regard to cards and flowers sent recently. Nominations
are needed for Officers for 2002/2003. These will be discussed at

High Street, Warsop, NG20 0AG I have been following up several issues whilst in parliament, especially around the compensation claims of former miners and after a successful meeting in Worksop a number of claims have been pursued with some claims being either settled or interim payments made. The whole process is still to slow and I am continuing to press for a speedier conclusion to these cases. Brian Wilson the Energy Minister is visiting the constituency during February to meet with the women who have not yet received their equal value claims. This has come about through my lobbying him to address this important issue. Hopefully he will be able to make a decision on this matter very soon, so that those ladies concerned can receive some compensation. The deplorable state of the Top Cat site should soon be resolved. I understand that Mansfield District Council have now taken action to have the site taken into their control for this building to be demolished. Although this has taken a while to resolve, they should be congratulated for pursuing this to what I hope will be a very positive outcome. The whole matter of regenerating Warsop has moved forward and I hope to be in a position to expand on this within the next couple of months. I know that there has been much talk about this but I'm now very actively pushing for some action to be taken. I am meeting with a number of people over the next few weeks and will let you know what happens. My office in Warsop is now open and I intend to use this base as a way of getting to see more people in Warsop. If there are any groups who would like me to visit them, then please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01623-844522. WARSOP
CARNIVAL 2002 The Carnival Committee has already started making plans for the Jubilee Year Carnival and some new events are being planned. All clubs, groups, schools, organisations and businesses throughout the district are invited to make a note in their diaries of the above date and start preparing. The theme for the floats this year is "THE QUEENS GOLDEN JUBILEE" which hopefully will prove popular and colourful for all age groups. Please
book your pitch early. You can do this by contacting Andy Wetton
on telephone number 842138 or drop a note with your details
into his shop on Sherwood Street. |

This group was recently formed to assist Patients and Staff. We meet every month to discuss any non-medical problems and help in any way possible. At our last meeting the committee brought up certain concerns voiced by some patients - but are happy with the long term plans that are being put in place - They include the following.
Dr. "C" and his staff have been under a lot of pressure during this time, so we the above committee appeal to all "Patients - to be Patient". The planned changes will be of benefit to all but will take time. The new Warsop Surgery was planned to open 'Mar - April 2002' but was suddenly brought forward to January 1st, which caused the staffing, and administration problems experienced. Dr. Suddel is coping as best as he can under these extreme and very difficult times, but is obviously under a lot of strain. The committee are appealing therefore for us all to give him the support he needs to continue the excellent service we have all enjoyed in the past. You will all agree, I am sure, it is the very least we can do, and is our way of saying a well deserved THANK YOU. - Ann & Sheila | |

Bramblings, Bramblings and even more Bramblings, from the Old Part to Robin Hood estate, Church Warsop to Meden Vale these beautiful finches from the birch forests of Fenno-Scandia are visiting feeding stations and gardens all over our fair village. Look out for a bird the same size as a Chaffinch but with a very distinctive white rump. Thanks to everyone who contacted me about last month's report. In particular my comments about Geese only living in the Northern Hemisphere seem to have caused some confusion. A number of readers were quick to point out that they have seen geese on visits to Australia, the far east and even the Falklands, and of course they are right, what I was referring to (perhaps with hindsight I should have been more specific), was what scientists and ornithologists call 'True' geese, these are the 'grey' geese (Anser) and the 'black' geese (Branta) the ones in the southern hemisphere are something similar to our Shellduck I suppose,- neither duck nor goose but something in between! I hope that clears up the confusion. Since that little 'goose fact' caused so much interest, what about a few more? geese are monogamous and pair for life, both parents tend the young and the adults moult all flight feathers simultaneously and are flightless for about 3 to 4 weeks in summer and are vulnerable to predation by foxes during this time. An extremely rare Lark, the Woodlark is making a sensational comeback at a number of local sites, it would be wrong perhaps even against the law to list the known sites but they are definitely doing better of late. Tony Fell reports three Buzzards over Hammerwater Drive on February 3rd; other records include Fieldfare, Redwing and Golden Plover over towards Warsop Vale. The Woodland Trust has joined forces with The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology to monitor and record the effect of climatic change on wildlife and habitats. The main thrust of this initiative is to record natures clock or phenology to give it its scientific name and The UK Phenology Network are asking for information on things like first sighting of frog spawn, the appearance of flowers, butterflies and arrival of migrant birds such as Cuckoo, Swallows and House martins. Anyone who is interested in taking part in this very important work can get the information and the record forms from the UK Phenology Trust FREEPOST Autumn Park, Grantham, Lincs NG31 6BR Tel. 01476581111 or visit their WebPages on www.woodland-trust.org.uk The news from Minster Wood is that the diversity and species listed there grows bigger by the week and the work that Trev Kinch and his team are putting in to establish the Hazel coppice is already paying dividends. When Trev first started there he recorded just thirteen species of ground flora after just two years he is now recording forty-five! Add to this the butterflies birds and mammals that will benefit from this sustainable programme and it is easy to see that this little area is going to be a hotspot of the future, who knows, one day we may even get a Nightingale to return. Birklands Ringing Group have received some very interesting recoveries of birds ringed in Warsop or ringed in other places and have subsequently landed in Warsop. These include a number of Siskins going North to the Highlands of Scotland and even to Sweden in one case. A Canada goose moving from Warsop to Attenborough Nature Reserve and a Goldcrest going to Holland. I will report on any future ringing results as they come to hand, it really is amazing where 'our' birds turn up sometimes. Late
News; The year is on the turn, Great tits, Song thrush, Mistle
thrush and Robin have all been in full song and Lesser Celandine is
starting to appear. Listen out for Chiffchaff and Blackcap and any
other spring migrants as they begin to arrive, usually around late
March. Keep your records coming in to me at 55 George Street, or via
email at moody49er@aol.com
