NEIGHBOURHOOD RENEWAL
COMMUNITY CHEST FOR
MANSFIELD & AREA

Do you know a community or voluntary group that could benefit from a small grant from a new and exciting programme? Yes. Then Neighbourhood
Renewal Community Chest may be for you. What is the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest for Mansfield? Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest for Mansfield is a small grants programme which is part of the Government's strategy for regenerating the most deprived neighbourhoods. It provides small amounts of funding to help local people become involved in improving their communities.

Who can apply?
Voluntary or community groups can apply,
this simply means groups which have a charitable aim, you don't have to be a registered charity but you must have a set of rules or constitution. If your group does not have a bank account, you will need to find a group who may be able to accept the funds on your behalf, such as a community and voluntary service
organisation (CVS).

Does the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest have any priorities?
Yes. It will be targeted to help the most deprived communities in Mansfield at a very local level; there are also priorities which relate to marginalised communities such as: black and minority ethnic, refugees, young people, travellers, disabled people, faith communities & older people Groups applying for Community Chest funding will need to explain how their project or community fits these priorities.

Are there any particular themes that Community Chest can be used for?
There are 5 broad objectives or themes for Community Chests: Encouraging greater involvement in local community activities.
Building management and organisational skills
Improving neighbourhoods
Helping BME communities explore their history and promote racial harmony and social cohesion
Supporting any other activity that enables the regeneration of communities.

What grants are available?
We will be able to make grants from £50 to £5,000 to groups. We particularly want to help small and new groups for whom this may be their first experience of applying for funding, but also welcome applications from more established groups. What do you do next if you have a good idea that will help regenerate your community? Contact Nottinghamshire Community Foundation for an application pack at NCF,

HOORAY FOR SMALL ANIMALS!!

I was very glad to hear about the Small Pet Awareness Day that the Old Mill Animal Supplies recently organised. This was probably aimed at children but I hope that parents learned something as well. Being the owner of 3 rabbits I know how important it is not only to feed the correct diet but also that these lovely little creatures need much more stimulation than being stuck in a hutch at the bottom of a garden with nothing to do all day and all night, every day and every night - can you imagine a life like that? Rabbits are naturally very inquisitive and love to get their little twitching noses into everything to have a look. They also love running and leaping around to stretch their legs and keep their claws down, which also keeps their weight down (and not to mention the odd little dig now and then, much to the dismay of my husband just like to say sorry to him) but under supervision and with
certain "ground" rules your garden needn't be turned into a giant rabbit warren!

I know it should go without saying that all pets still need looking after when we go away on holiday but sadly this isn't always the case. I recently came across a bunny that was being left for 3 or 4 days at a time, without any food, water or bedding in a hutch much too small for her. She now lives with me and is happy (yes you really can tell when they are happy or sad), she has plenty of room and food and goes out for a daily run. It is a big responsibility having a pet but some people think that excludes small animals and that they can leave them to their own devices when they go away.

Please remember that they are at our mercy and rely on us to look after them properly (which I'm happy to say that most people do) but there are still some exceptions. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful father-in-law, Alan, who is always willing to help feed the rabbits when I go away (think he secretly quite enjoys it really) - thanks Alan.

CHURCH WARSOP MINERS WELFARE JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB
FOOTBALL FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

image of a boy playing footballThe new Church Warsop Miners Welfare Junior Football Club was established last year with two teams at under 8's and under 9's. Both teams have had a successful first year, however the under 9's have rounded off an amazing first year by finishing runners upin the Junior Football Tours East Coast Cup and by winning their league. Success on the pitch is not the main aim of the club, we are committed to providing quality coaching for all ages and abilities and currently work in local schools providing over 150 children a week with opportunities to play football. Two children have reaped the rewards from our coaching and have secured places in professional clubs centres of excellence.

Ensuring high standards and the safety of children, our club is run to guidelines set by the Football Association and we have recently applied for the F.A. Charter Standard, which means a our Managers are F.A. and first aid qualified and have attended child protection courses. Football development is overseen by Mark Craddock a fully qualified F.A. coach currently working for Chesterfield F.C. As part of Chesterfield's development program, Mark runs a skill centre on Sunday mornings at Church Vale School. The centre for 7 to 10 year olds provides opportunities for children to progress to Chesterfield's centre of excellence.

If you would like further details about the skill centre or would like your child to play in next seasons under 8's, 9's and 10's please contact Mark Craddock, 22 Wickerwood Drive, Kirkby in Ashfield, Notts NG17 8ER. Tel/Fax: 01623 483659. Email: fun.soccer@btopenworld.com

Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group

Our next walk on Sunday 19th May will be from Edale
in the Peak District. The exact route will depend on the weather conditions on the day. Anybody who shares the interests of this group is very welcome to
join us, please contact on the number below to confirm arrangements. We meet outside Warsop library at 9:15 and travel together by minibus. We each make a small contribution toward the expenses.
We have now finalised our walks programme for the
next year. It includes a mixture of local walks and trips that are further afield, usually in the Peak District.
Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group Walks Programme 2002-2003

2002
May 19 Edale 9:15
June 16 The Roaches 8:30
July 21 Whitwell 10:00
Aug 18 Teversal to Warsop 10:00
Sept 15 Around Warsop 10:00
Oct 20 Fox House to Baslow 9:15
Nov 17 Epperstone 10:00
Dec 15 Local Christmas Walk 10:00
2003
Jan 19 Derbyshire 9:15
Feb 16 Bilsthorpe to Warsop 10:00
Mar 16 Anston 10:00

Meet outside Warsop Library for all walks. Please phone to confirm details The fine local walk for this time of year takes in Collier Spring Wood at Church Warsop to see the brilliant display of bluebells. The management of these woods has allowed more light in and the woodland flowers have thrived. A good route is
to walk through the woods and then follow the public footpath than runs parallel to the disused railway line. When you leave the woods near the pedestrian tunnel beneath the railway you can either turn right through the tunnel into Cuckney Hay Wood or continue straight on to meet William Wood Lane. At this point you can turn left towards Warsop Vale or return to Church Warsop along the line of the railway.

If you share this group's interest in the local countryside I would like to recommend the WEA course covering the archaeological and agricultural landscape of Warsop that starts on 23rd May. The tutor, Ian Wall, gave a similar course last year that was particularly interesting and enjoyable. This course promises to have a strong Warsop focus and should give insights into how our landscape developed.

On the first Sunday of every month we are out and about in Warsop doing maintenance work on the footpaths and other conservation work. If you come across us, stop for a chat, we appreciate any excuse for a rest! If you would like to join us you don't need to be particularly fit - there are always jobs like raking up grass, cutting brambles and handing round the tea and biscuits! Call us if you are interested in helping in
any way. You can contact the Secretary on telephone: 01623 46281

WF&CG is a community group whose members
share an interest in the countryside. We help maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake
conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment.

FROM THE EDITOR
I received a request from Trudie Crossan of Warsop to publish the following poem which she sent to the Queen Mother for her 80th birthday.Trudie is particularly keen to highlight the last line of the poem. (I am delighted to be able to publish this poem and would welcome others S Bowman, Editor)

"That Certain Smile"
As I strolled through Sherwood Forest admiring some squirrels lovely and brown,
I suddenly had a desire to go to London town,
Excitedly in London, I knocked upon a door,
a butler said, come in please,
Then a lady smiled at me, but I didn't feel at ease,
To the butler I apologised as I left the door,
I said, I am very sorry Sir, but that is not the smile I am searching for,
The special lady I know has travelled many miles visiting far off parts,
That certain smile has always captured millions of hearts,
I strolled through London town again up and down a cobbled street,
Searching for a wonderful lady I dearly wished to meet,
I found a very large building; the iron gates were high and wide,
But the duty policeman would not let me go inside.
I was disillusioned and cold as my blood drained from every vein,
Because I began to wonder if my journey was in vain,
Lonely and very tired I turned to go away,
Feeling very disappointed because I knew it was our lady's special day,
My sadness turned to joy when at a window I saw a figure there,
Smiling as always and waving with loving care,
All of a sudden echoing through London the bells rang out loud and clear,
To celebrate a very special birthday of our lady so dear,
The crowds started cheering and shouting away,
Then out came our lady, who is grand in every way,
Gracefully she moved, demure and so elegantly she stood,
Giving us all that well known wonderful smile which I knew she would,
Who was it, with that certain smile; well it could not belong to any other,
But my sweetheart, our glorious and gracious lovely Queen Mother,
Dame Vera Lynn is the forces sweetheart she sang very sweetly far away,
But I am certain, that our dear lady will be a sweetheart for ever and a day,
I returned to Sherwood Forest, but I prayed when the day was done,
For God to grant our dear Queen Mother, the best of health and strength, for many years to come.

Spring is in the air, the days are getting longer and Warsop Carnival is just around the corner. As ever our small but dedicated committee has worked tirelessly throughout the long winter months, to gain funding and organise this year’s event. Now in our 15th year, planning and organising our event doesn’t get any easier! Some criticism was levied towards us last year in the local press, some comment misguided but some points justified and this year we have looked to make things a little different! We are one of the largest free shows in the area and aim to be the Best! To achieve that we need the whole community to get behind us and make carnival weekend a real lift to the Town. As we are in the Queens Jubilee Year we will make that our theme for our parade and floats! We appeal to all our local schools, youth groups and charitable organisations to make a great effort to enter a float or decorate a car! We are always supported by local transport companies and owe a lot of our success to Bowrings, Eastwoods, Glebe Farm, Peter Parkin and many others for providing lorries & drivers to make our parade a great spectacle! We hope to have our usual array of marching bands and artists to help create a great atmosphere. Because we are in Jubilee Year our Town centre will be decked in bunting from late May, adding to our carnival fever but also creating the right environment to
celebrate the Jubilee in early June 2002.

photo of clownsHow is our carnival going to be different? Well for a start we are planning to have an extended music festival with live bands performing Saturday 6th July 4 – 9.30pm in addition to carnival afternoon – full line up to be confirmed in our next edition WATCH this space (Some great local talent on show). MEDEN CHARITABLE FUND SPONSORED BY COALFIELDS REGENERATION TRUST

Meden Charitable Fund were lucky enough to receive funding from Coalfields Regeneration Trust during the latter part of 2000. The funds were awarded for the purchase of the leasehold of shop premises and their refurbishment and for some of the running costs involved. A big Thank you to Coalfields Regeneration Trust for their faith in our venture.

During the period of funding we were surprised to learn that we have been able, through your generosity, to donate the massive amount of £22,000, to groups within the locality, nearly half of which was used to provide new equipment for the benefit of patients of Meden Vale Medical Centre.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in any way since we started as a small group in the summer of 1998. We have gone from strength to strength and hope we can rely on your support in the future. Thank you - Trustees and Volunteers of Meden Charitable Fund

Meden SchooI Technology College
Maximising potential

Meden wins an award for school achievement

The Meden School has won a DfES school achievement award for improving examination results over a three year period from 1998 to 2001. This is the latest accolade for Meden which gained specialist school status as a Technology College in 2001. This award recognises the hard work put in by all of the staff over the last few years and complements the Investors in People award gained in 2000 and again in 2001.

Meden will now be entitled to add the special award logo to the school stationery but the main benefit comes in the form of cash bonuses to be distributed to all of the staff who worked at the school during 2000-2001.
The Headteacher, Patrick Cook, said 'This is the first time that the school has won the prestigious award, hopefully it wont be the last. I am delighted that the efforts of the whole staff team have been recognised in such a tangible way.
Headteacher: Mr P Cook, B Ed, MA (Ed).

Changes to
Warsop Policing

From 2nd April 2002, the policing of Mansfield Division changed. Apart from as most of the town centre regulars will agree they have actually seen “Bobbies” on “Foot” complete with Big Hats. This all complies with the Force Policing Plan which basically means that the policing areas now comply with the local council areas, so, Warsop benefits slightly with more foot patrol officers.

Another significant change is that Pc 120 Clyde Derbyshire is now designated Beat Manager for Meden Vale, Church Warsop and Warsop Vale. In plain English he is the local bobby now for those villages. His role in Warsop has been taken over by Pc 216 Frank Fisher who has been one of the regular panda car officers for the village for several years and he will try to fill Pc Derbyshire’s shoes.
