BIRKLANDS SCHOOL COMMUNITY ROOM PROJECT
Local firms bid for the building of the project and Eastwoods got the contract, they started work on the 19th August and it is now near completion. The purpose of this room is to engage parents and children, and the community and children in activities together by providing a games and book exchange library, a computer room with laptops for parents to use with free internet access, a quiet area and conference facilities for local community groups. There is also a small kitchen for making drinks and disabled facilities including full disabled access.
When I visited Nick and Barbara and they showed me the room there was a definite air of excitement about this project I cant wait now either!! Visit their web site on www.birklandscommunity.co.uk |

A
dividend for Credit Union Members!
|
|
Meden Money Tree
Credit Union recently held its second Annual General Meeting at 14
High Street. Chairman Ros Jones gave a report to members and thanked
all the volunteers who had worked for the credit union over the year
manning collection points and working on committees. Meden
Money Tree Credit Union has grown steadily since it was launched in
November 2001 and has over 90 members in the Warsop and Shirebrook
area. Treasurer Ruth Hallam presented the financial report. Collectively members have saved over £13,000, enabling the credit union to provide small low-cost loans to members. She thanked Notts County Council and the Credit Union Network for all their help and support over the year. Warsop Parish Council, Shirebrook Town Council, Derbyshire Community Foundation and Mansfield District Council also helped with funding support. Ruth was pleased to report that the Auditor and the Board of Directors felt that the first year had gone so well that they were able to recommend to the AGM that the credit union distribute to members a dividend of 1%. This was voted on and accepted by the meeting. This is a tremendous achievement for the credit unions first eleven months of trading. Meden Money Tree Credit Union currently runs three collection points, at Warsop Town Hall from 9.30 to12 noon on Thursday mornings, at the Age Concern building from 9.30 to 12 noon on Saturday mornings, and at the Healthy Living Centre on Patchwork Row in Shirebrook from 9.15 to 11.30am on Wednesday mornings. You can find out more information about joining the credit union by calling in at one of the collection points or phoning the Credit Union Network on freephone 0800 3891162. |

A pilot scheme which has revolutionised the way the people in two areas of the Mansfield District dispose of and recycle their rubbish has been given a massive thumbs-up by residents. Around 2,500 properties in parts of Berry Hill and Warsop have been trialling the twin bin scheme since July last year. Under the scheme, households are given a blue wheelie bin which they use for recyclable items whilst continuing to put their other waste in their existing green bin. The different coloured bins are collected on alternate weeks. In a survey sent to every property taking part in the pilot, a staggering 91.5% of people said that they wanted the scheme to continue and 93% said that they were satisfied with the scheme. Just 5% said that they were dissatisfied. Other findings of the survey, which was responded to by almost half the properties in the pilot area, were:
As a thank you
for responding to the survey, 250 households were drawn out of the
hat to receive a free compost bin from Mansfield Mr Walter Foreman (centre) of Wood Lane, Church Warsop was the first respondent drawn out and received a bottle of champagne in addition to his new compost bin. £14M boost for 900 houses in 11 towns Nearly
1,000 rundown homes across Meden Valley are to be refurbished or
demolished thanks to a multi-million pound cash windfall to breathe
life into former coalfield areas. In a major regeneration project,
£14 million will be spent on 900 houses in 11 towns and villages
in the Mansfield Area including Warsop, Shirebrook, Mansfield
Woodhouse and Pleasley as well as neighbouring communities
in Bolsover. Government ministers announced the news last week and
project leaders immediately welcomed the cash boost, saying it would Under the community-boosting proposals, about half the properties will be restored while around 450 terraced homes will be flattened and replaced by more modern houses over the next four or five years. Local housing associations will then be bought in to run rent-or-buy schemes once work on the homes is completed. East Midlands Development Agency chiefs, which prepared the bid along with English Partnerships and Mansfield and Bolsover councils, say the move should breathe new life into the 11 communities and make it easier for folk to afford quality housing. It is hoped that the scheme will also attract firms to relocate in the area and create more job opportunities for local residents. Project organisers also hope to bring a Government minister to the area later this year to see the showcase scheme. - Article supplied by CHAD AGE

Start Meden Valley Pet
pooch helps celebrate micro-chipping milestone Clive Shipman, Principal Environmental Health Officer at Mansfield District Council said: We are delighted the scheme is going so well. It is really important for all dog owners to protect their pets by getting them micro-chipped. It is a key component of our Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) scheme, which we operate at the Council. The RDO campaign has been a fantastic success. The Council was a national runner up for the best campaign in 2002, and received an award at the Kennel Club, in London Piccadilly last week for the successful campaign, which involves a mixture of raising awareness, education and enforcement surrounding good dog ownership. We very much believe in educating people in responsible dog ownership and we also recognise our role in enforcing against dog fouling. Already this year we have taken one man to court for allowing his dog to foul a public place. He was fined £60 with £60 court costs. And we have three cases pending court. The maximum fine for allowing a dog to foul is £1,000. |

Greener,
cleaner energy grows on trees

With the effects of recent floods still high in many peoples minds, a new Notts company could hold the key to slowing down climate change. RENU (Renewable Nottinghamshire Utilities Ltd) is a not-for-profit company which has just been formed by the County Council and local partners to help provide green energy. Under the scheme, known as the Wood Heat Project, trees and waste wood from locally managed forests will provide cleaner energy for public and private sector businesses. Uniquely, RENU offers an all-in-one package, supplying and installing boilers and providing the wood fuel. The project offers very real economic and environmental benefits. Growing the fuel locally will help provide new local jobs, new skills and new woodlands bringing real tourism benefits to many former industrial areas, boosting the local economy. While the trees are growing, they will be doing their bit for the environment by soaking up greenhouse gases like CO2. Burning wood will also produce far less CO2 and greenhouse gases compared to using conventional fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. And by growing the fuel locally, transportation costs, traffic congestion and pollution will be kept to a minimum. The project will also use waste wood from local companies which would normally go to landfill sites in the county. RENU will support local companies by installing and operating heating systems, whilst the customer pays only for the heat supplied. The company will also acquire and prepare the wood ready for use before delivering it directly to the customers door. Councillor John Stocks, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: "With the recent floods affecting the UK, it really hits home the message that climate change isnt just a global problem, but affects our own local communities too." "Schemes like the Wood Heat Project take a step in the right direction for Nottinghamshire by cutting down pollution as well as having the added benefit of improving the local economy." "We hope that RENU will be successful and help more local companies to turn over a new leaf and use greener, cleaner energy to benefit everyone in the county." As well as using wood that is already growing in the forest, RENU plans to establish new woodlands using innovative new growing techniques. RENU will be made up of partners from the County Council, Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council, Nottingham Energy Partnership, Sherwood Energy Village, FBS Woodland Solutions Ltd and Wastecycle Ltd. |
