BIRKLANDS SCHOOL COMMUNITY ROOM PROJECT

Birklands community room under constructionThe idea for the Community Room Project started 2 years ago by Nick Hague and Barbara Caseley. With determination and persistence to get this idea off the ground, Nick and Barbara applied for funding and the Neighbourhood Management Team agreed to fund the project. Birklands community room under construction

Local firms bid for the building of the project and Eastwoods got the contract, they started work on the 19th August and it is now near completion.

The purpose of this room is to engage parents and children, and the community and children in activities together by providing a games and book exchange library, a computer room with laptops for parents to use with free internet access, a quiet area and conference facilities for local community groups. There is also a small kitchen for making drinks and disabled facilities including full disabled access.

The Launch date will hopefully be in May. A week of activities will be organised – watch this space for full details!

When I visited Nick and Barbara and they showed me the room there was a definite air of excitement about this project – I can’t wait now either!!

Editor's Letter

The mornings and evenings are now getting lighter and Spring is definitely on its way. This is my favourite season, new plants and trees, new born lambs, new beginnings and lots of new things to look forward to! The work has started in the town centre and I have had positive
feedback from all of the people who have called to see me and look at the plans, it’s a very exciting beginning for Warsop.

There will lots more things happening in Warsop and as I get to know about them and when there are new plans to look at, I will let you know. I am looking for 2 distributors to deliver the Warsop and District News to homes in Meden Vale, if you are interested please contact me. Kind regards, Tania

A BIT OF WARSOP HISTORY

image of a plaqueimage of a shieldThe National Savings movement first started in 1916. From 1940 onwards, local savings weeks became regular events. At every savings drive there was a list showing the price of an item of equipment to be purchased, which could range from hand-grenades at four shillings each to £20,000 for a Wellington Bomber.

Warships Weeks held from October 1941 – March 1942 were aimed at
drawing the nation’s attention to just how much it owed its navy. The people of Warsop adopted HMS GUAVA. Not only was money provided but the girls at Burns Lane Girls School wrote letters to the sailors and their mums knitted jumpers, socks and hats for them. That’s all I know for now but if anyone out there has anything to add I would be pleased to hear from them. Tania Barlow Tel: 01623 846011 Fax: 01623 846012 E-Mail: tbarlow@warsop.gov.uk

A dividend for Credit Union Members!

Meden Money Tree Credit Union recently held its second Annual General Meeting at 14 High Street. Chairman Ros Jones gave a report to members and thanked all the volunteers who had worked for the credit union over the year manning collection points and working on committees. Meden Money Tree Credit Union has grown steadily since it was launched in November 2001 and has over 90 members in the Warsop and Shirebrook area. photo of credit union volunteers

Treasurer Ruth Hallam presented the financial report. Collectively members have saved over £13,000, enabling the credit union to provide small low-cost loans to members. She thanked Notts County Council and the Credit Union Network for all their help and support over the year. Warsop Parish Council, Shirebrook Town Council, Derbyshire Community Foundation and Mansfield District Council also helped with funding support. Ruth was pleased to report that the Auditor and the Board of Directors felt that the first year had gone so well that they were able to recommend to the AGM that the credit union distribute to members a dividend of 1%. This was voted on and accepted by the meeting. This is a tremendous achievement for the credit union’s first eleven months of trading.

Meden Money Tree Credit Union currently runs three collection points, at Warsop Town Hall from 9.30 to12 noon on Thursday mornings, at the Age Concern building from 9.30 to 12 noon on Saturday mornings, and at the Healthy Living Centre on Patchwork Row in Shirebrook from 9.15 to 11.30am on Wednesday mornings. You can find out more information about joining the credit union by calling in at one of the collection points or phoning the Credit Union Network on freephone 0800 3891162.

presentation photoResidents give thumbs-up to twin bin scheme

A pilot scheme which has revolutionised the way the people in two areas of the Mansfield District dispose of and recycle their rubbish has been given a massive thumbs-up by residents. Around 2,500 properties in parts of Berry Hill and Warsop have been trialling the twin bin scheme since July last year. Under the scheme, households are given a blue wheelie bin which they use for recyclable items whilst continuing to put their other waste in their existing green bin. The different coloured bins are collected on alternate weeks.

In a survey sent to every property taking part in the pilot, a staggering 91.5% of people said that they wanted the scheme to continue and 93% said that they were satisfied with the scheme. Just 5% said that they were dissatisfied. Other findings of the survey, which was responded to by almost half the properties in the pilot area, were:

87% said that the scheme has encouraged them to recycle more.
Only 1% of respondents said that they didn’t recycle before and they don’t recycle now.
85% of households said that they could fit all recyclable materials in their blue bins.

As a thank you for responding to the survey, 250 households were drawn out of the hat to receive a free compost bin from Mansfield
District Council, which will enable them to recycle even more in the future. Mr Walter Foreman of Wood Lane, Church Warsop was the first respondent drawn out and received a bottle of champagne in addition to his new compost bin, presented by the Chairman of Mansfield District Council, Coun John Allin and Executive Mayor, Tony Egginton. Coun Phillip Smith, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council said: “The positive response we have received to our survey reflects the positive way in which the people of Berry Hill and Warsop have embraced the twin bin scheme.” “It was their feedback and the success that they made of the scheme which persuaded us to pursue the funds to establish the scheme district-wide, which we will now be doing within the next 18 months.”

£14M boost for 900 houses in 11 towns

Nearly 1,000 rundown homes across Meden Valley are to be refurbished or demolished thanks to a multi-million pound cash windfall to breathe life into former coalfield areas. In a major regeneration project, £14 million will be spent on 900 houses in 11 towns and villages in the Mansfield Area – including Warsop, Shirebrook, Mansfield Woodhouse and Pleasley – as well as neighbouring communities in Bolsover. Government ministers announced the news last week and project leaders immediately welcomed the cash boost, saying it would
help give a better standard of life to many people.

Under the community-boosting proposals, about half the properties will be restored while around 450 terraced homes will be flattened and replaced by more modern houses over the next four or five years. Local housing associations will then be bought in to run rent-or-buy schemes once work on the homes is completed. East Midlands Development Agency chiefs, which prepared the bid along with English Partnerships and Mansfield and Bolsover councils, say the move should breathe new life into the 11 communities and make it easier for folk to afford quality housing. It is hoped that the scheme will also attract firms to relocate in the area and create more job opportunities for local residents. Project organisers also hope to bring a Government minister to the area later this year to see the showcase scheme. - Article supplied by CHAD

Pet pooch helps celebrate micro-chipping milestone
Photo of microchipped dogs Teddy the Lakeland Terrier received a special visit from the Chairman of Mansfield Council to celebrate being the 500th dog to be micro-chipped. The loveable pooch, who is only five months old, was micro-chipped last week (Thursday 30th January). And in a strange coincidence Teddy’s mum, Gertie, a three year-old Lakeland Terrier, was one the first dogs to be micro-chipped under the scheme three years ago. Teddy’s owner Debra Edha of Warsop said: “My pets are really special to me and I would not want to lose one, so by having
them micro-chipped I have piece of mind that they are safer. If I was to lose one of them, I can contact the Council as soon as soon as it happens and they are made aware so it is easier to find them. It is also greater protection for me and other people against theft of pets.”
The Micro-chipping scheme has been operating in the district for three years. It started off as a pilot scheme in Titchfield ward and was extended across the district shortly after.

Clive Shipman, Principal Environmental Health Officer at Mansfield District Council said: “We are delighted the scheme is going so well. It is really important for all dog owners to protect their pets by getting them micro-chipped. It is a key component of our Responsible Dog Ownership (RDO) scheme, which we operate at the Council. “The RDO campaign has been a fantastic success. The Council was a national runner up for the best campaign in 2002, and received an award at the Kennel Club, in London Piccadilly last week for the successful campaign, which involves a mixture of raising awareness, education and enforcement surrounding good dog ownership.”

“We very much believe in educating people in responsible dog ownership and we also recognise our role in enforcing against dog fouling. Already this year we have taken one man to court for allowing his dog to foul a public place. He was fined £60 with £60 court costs. And we have three cases pending court. The maximum fine for allowing a dog to foul is £1,000.”

CALLING ALL WALKERS

DUTCH STUDENTS GET TO GRIPS WITH DESIGN IN MANSFIELD

Four Dutch students brought their European flair to Mansfield District Council as part of a cultural work exchange programme coordinated by West Notts Technical College.

Photo of Dutch students and Chairman of MDC
Josephine van der Klauw and Ronald de Man spent the first week of their two week visit in Nottinghamshire working in the Leisure and Technical Services office at Mansfield District Council.

While Danielle Schouteten and Stefan Graafland, who had spent their first week with National House Building Council (NHBC), spent their second week at Mansfield Council.

The foursome from Crabeth College, Gouda, spent their time experiencing the differences of design and construction practices between the UK and Holland. As well as spending time in the Council’s design office environment, they visited a variety of construction projects, ranging from a prestigious housing development, a drainage remedial project, a highway maintenance scheme and the multi million pound improvement scheme on the A46 between Newark and Lincoln. The Design staff at Scott Wilson on behalf of the contractor and Paul Thursby of Alfred McAlpine hosted the two visits. Coun John Allin, Chairman of Mansfield District Council welcomed Josephine and Ronald and also Danielle and Stefan to the Council, and presented them with memento’s of their visit to Mansfield.

Greener, cleaner energy grows on trees

With the effects of recent floods still high in many people’s minds, a new Notts company could hold the key to slowing down climate change. RENU (Renewable Nottinghamshire Utilities Ltd) is a not-for-profit company which has just been formed by the County Council and local partners to help provide ‘green energy’. Under the scheme, known as the Wood Heat Project, trees and waste wood from locally managed forests will provide cleaner energy for public and private sector businesses. Uniquely, RENU offers an all-in-one package, supplying and installing boilers and providing the wood fuel.

The project offers very real economic and environmental benefits. Growing the fuel locally will help provide new local jobs, new skills and new woodlands – bringing real tourism benefits to many former industrial areas, boosting the local economy. While the trees are growing, they will be doing their bit for the environment by soaking up greenhouse gases like CO2. Burning wood will also produce far less CO2 and greenhouse gases compared to using conventional fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. And by growing the fuel locally, transportation costs, traffic congestion and pollution will be kept to a minimum.

The project will also use waste wood from local companies which would normally go to landfill sites in the county. RENU will support local companies by installing and operating heating systems, whilst the customer pays only for the heat supplied. The company will also acquire and prepare the wood ready for use before delivering it directly to the customer’s door. Councillor John Stocks, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: "With the recent floods affecting the UK, it really hits home the message that climate change isn’t just a global problem, but affects our own local communities too." "Schemes like the Wood Heat Project take a step in the right direction for Nottinghamshire by cutting down pollution as well as having the added benefit of improving the local economy." "We hope that RENU will be successful and help more local companies to turn over a new leaf and use greener, cleaner energy to benefit everyone in the county."

As well as using wood that is already growing in the forest, RENU plans to establish new woodlands using innovative new growing techniques. RENU will be made up of partners from the County Council, Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council, Nottingham Energy Partnership, Sherwood Energy Village, FBS Woodland Solutions Ltd and Wastecycle Ltd.
