THE PACE OF TECHNOLOGY

The steam engine was to the Industrial Revolution what the microchip now is to the Technological Revolution.

A computer in the home was unusual ten years ago but has become more common during the past five years due to the mass production of the microchip. This has led to Personal Computers being the fastest selling household electrical item in the western world. The development in computer technology is moving so fast that a machine has no sooner been installed than it is outdated by a faster, more capable one being introduced onto the market.

It is not only the hardware that has changed in the PC world. Over the past three

or four years we have seen changes in software format, from 5 1/4 inch floppy

disks, to 3 1/2inch floppy disks and now to CD ROMS. We are no longer

restricted to the Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS DOS). There are other

operating systems such as OS/2 although Microsoft still dominates the market

with Windows 2000.

I dare not say that Windows 2000 is the newest, as by the time I go to press with this article it may have been superseded several times! The express pace of development in computer Technology not only causes a dilemma for the buyer, with the timing of their hardware purchase, but also for the companies who write the software. Computers are in fact capable of performing far more complicated tasks, but are restricted by the software programs and applications, which have to be written with the user in mind.

Ultimately a computer is only as good as its user.
